Harry Potter returns as Daniel, Emma and Rupert pictured in Gryffindor common room

Dec 9, 2021

Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have been seen in the first-look image from their upcoming reunion special, Return to Hogwarts.

The talented trio and many of their former co-stars will join forces for a one-off special due to air on the HBO Max streaming service on New Year's Day.

And just days after releasing the first trailer for the franchise's 20th-anniversary reunion, the newly released image shows Daniel, Emma and Rupert speaking in a room that appears to resemble the Gryffindor common room at Hogwarts.

Wearing a chic white ensemble, 31 year old Emma smiles as she looks at Rupert, who is seen staring at Daniel sitting across from him.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the new special is set to "share new details on the production through in-depth interviews and cast conversations".

The special's executive producer, Casey Patterson, told the publication that the reunion would delight fans of the franchise.

She said: "There's magic in the air here with this incredible cast, as they all return home to the original sets of Hogwarts, where they began 20 years ago."

"The excitement is palpable as they prepare to take their fans on a very special and personal journey through the making of these incredible films."

Daniel, Emma and Rupert – who played the lead roles of Harry, Hermione and Ron – have not made a public appearance together since the last premiere of the franchise, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2, in July 2011.

Other actors expected to participate in the reunion include Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Tom Felton, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, Jason Isaacs and Bonnie Wright.

Chris Columbus, the director of the first film in the series, which began in 2001 and ended in 2011, will also feature in the special.

However, series author JK Rowling is not thought to be appearing in the reunion.

The first look image comes just days after the teaser trailer gave fans a preview of what they can expect from the new release.

News of the new release was announced last month, with the cast of the eight films reuniting to discuss the Harry Potter franchise two decades after the first film was released in 2001.

Posting a throwback photo from the film earlier this year, Emma said: "Harry Potter was my home, my family, my world and Hermione (still is) my favourite fictional character of all time.

"I think a journalist once said it was irritating how many times during an interview I mentioned how lucky I was and started counting… BUT I DAMN WELL KNEW!!! And still know.

"I am proud not just of what we as group contributed as actors to the franchise but also as the children that became young adults that walked that path. I look at my fellow cast members now and I am just so proud of who everyone has become as people.

"I am proud we were kind to each other that we supported one another and that we held up something meaningful."
