Kevin Clifton was a Strictly Come Dancing pro from 2013 to 2019. And now, the 38-year-old dancer had spoken out about the supposed double standards that he became aware of between the male and female contestants while taking part in the popular programme.

Kevin, who danced with a number of famous faces including Susanna Reid, Louise Redknapp and his now-girlfriend Stacey Dooley over the years, claimed that audiences did not always warm to contestants if they appeared too confident.

He pointed out that they seemed to enjoy seeing the male celebrities play up the camera and exude confidence but it did not have the same reaction when women did the same thing.

The professional dancer said that it didn’t “sit right” with him.

He said we should be celebrating confident women.

“I’ve seen this so much on Strictly. I often see it that the male celebs can get away with a lot more than the female celebs,” he said on the topic.

“If a male celeb comes out and sort of rips their shirt off and winks at the camera and starts shimmying, in general the audience go, ‘Woah, that’s great. Yeah we love him.’

“But if a girl comes out and – not rips their shirt off, that wouldn’t be appropriate – if a girl comes out and winks at the camera and does a shimmy and looks confident in the same way, there is something about that the audience immediately go, ‘Oh, she’s a bit over confident. She thinks she’s really good. She thinks she’s better than she is.’

“And I don’t like it. I’m always like why is it OK for men to be confident but not women to be confident? That doesn’t sit right with me,” he added during an appearance on his podcast The Kevin Clifton Show.

He went on to say that if he had a daughter he would raise her to have confidence in herself.

Kevin then named at least two former contestants that he felt this had happened to.

The former pro believes that 2020 contestant Maisie Smith, 20, who is best known for playing Tiffany Butcher in EastEnders, experienced this.

As did 2017 star Alexandra Burke, 33.

After quitting Strictly at the start of 2020, Kevin went on to land a number of theatre roles.

He is currently starring in the UK tour of Rock of Ages.

The dancer is reprising the role of Stacee Jaxx, which he first played back in 2018.

He also starred in The Wedding Singer and Singin’ in the Rain.

Earlier this month, Kevin revealed that he will return to his Latin and ballroom dancing roots for a tour of the country with Burn The Floor.

He dubbed the production, “the most influential ballroom and Latin show of all time,” when he shared the news on Instagram.

Shows will take place in Blackpool and Brighton during January and February 2022.

Kevin was a principal dancer for the company from 2008 to 2013.
