Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King Already Discussed What to Do if Gayle Ever Sleeps With Stedman Graham

Jul 2, 2021

Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King have been best friends for so long that we couldn’t even imagine them ever betraying each other. Though we’re certain the two women would never hurt one another purposefully, they still have a plan in place in case Gayle were to ever “lose her mind” and sleep with Oprah’s longtime partner, Stedman Graham — and it’s actually pretty funny.

Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King have been friends for years

Oprah and Gayle King go way back.

The two first met in their early 20s while working together at a Baltimore television station. However, it wasn’t until the media mogul invited King over to her home to take shelter from a snowstorm that the two really connected.

According to the CBS This Morning star, she initially turned down Winfrey’s offer to stay at her home because she had nothing to wear. Oprah, being the generous person she is, gave King some clothes — including underwear — and together, they rode out the storm while getting to know each other.

“We became friends that first night because for the first time, I met somebody who I felt was like me,” King explained in a 2006 article for O, The Oprah Magazine. “I’d never met anybody like that. Certainly not another black girl.”

Since then, the two women have been inseparable.

Not only have they taken trips and attended A-list events together, but King and Winfrey are always in contact with each other, talking on the phone as much as three or four times a day.

Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King have a plan for if Gayle ever hooks up with Stedman Graham

Like most BFFs, Winfrey and King would never dream of hurting each other. Though they would never go behind each other’s back for malicious intent, the two women have discussed what they would do if one of them were ever to break the other’s trust.

In 2019, the friends detailed a conversation they had a few years back about what would happen if King ever considers betraying Winfrey by sleeping with her long-term partner, Stedman Graham.

“This is interesting. Years ago, I think I’d been dating Stedman… I don’t know. I’ve been dating him since 1775. So we’ve been together a long time,” the talk show host said on an episode of her and King’s YouTube advice show The O.G. Chronicles. “But early on in our relationship, I was doing these shows [like] ‘My sister slept with my sister’s husband’ or ‘My sister slept with my boyfriend,’ and all that. And Gayle said…”

“If you ever catch me and Stedman, you know, boinking around, fooling around, you catch us in bed,” King interjected. “Oprah shouldn’t even be mad at me because she should say I’ve lost my mind. Take me to the hospital. You shouldn’t even be upset.”

“[Gayle] goes, ‘Call someone. Put me in the jackets and have me carried off because you will know that I have lost my mind,’” Oprah added as Gayle nodded along in agreement. “Lost my mind.”

But the famous journalist insisted that even if this were to happen, she shouldn’t be the only one to blame.

“You should be mad at [Stedman],” King noted.

Oprah learned how to be a good friend from Gayle

Winfrey and King have been great friends to each other over the years. While one might assume that the legendary talk show host has always known how to be such a good pal, it turns out that having a close relationship with King taught her a thing or two about friendship.

“I am so supportive of whoever or whatever you want to do or be. I am just there for you. There is no competition. If I am your friend never a hint of jealousy. And the same thing with my friend Gayle,” Winfrey told E! News in 2018. “I’ve actually modeled being a friend after the friend that Gayle has been to me.”

She continued, “I want to be the same friend to everyone that [Gayle’s] been to me so that no matter what happens to you so and even if I ain’t got no job and you got the best job, I am just so happy for you! I want my friends to soar … the sky isn’t even the limit.”
