Saturday Kitchen presenter Matt Tebbutt, 47, has broken his silence on his Twitter spat with The Great British Bake Off’s Ruby Tandoh last year, after she took issue with his show Daily Kitchen Live. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the star said he had no idea what her “issue” with the show was, which he fronted alongside The Bootstrap Cook, Jack Monroe, with the aiming to providing viewers with recipes on a budget and with limited, basic ingredients during lockdown. However, the baking star branded the chef a “g**” and accused him of “ragging on bottled lemon juice and frozen spinach” after the show aired.
Whatever – I’m really not fussed
Breaking his silence on the furious Twitter spat, Matt said that the Bake Off star’s reaction was not what he’d been expecting.
He said: “It’s not what you’d expect.”
The chef said that he doesn’t usually pay attention to criticism, and people are welcome to have their own opinions.
Matt continued: “I tend to not pay too much attention, if people want to spout out, if they’ve got their own opinion then be my guest.
“But there was a lot of people that it resonated with,” he said.
In April last year BBC’s popular weekend cooking show Saturday Kitchen was rebranded and aired under Daily Kitchen Live during the first lockdown period.
The aim of the show was to inspire recipes for viewers on a budget.
Going back to Ruby’s reaction, Matt said: “I don’t really know what her issue was, I’m not really that bothered to be honest.
“Whatever – I’m really not fussed,” he added.
After the show aired, Bake Off’s Ruby took issue with the presenter and was quick to hit out at him on Twitter in a now-deleted tweet to her 117,000 followers.
She wrote: “Why is Matt Tebbutt such a g*t.
“WHAT is the point in co-presenting a cooking show with @BootstrapCook for affordable and accessible recipes if you’re gonna spend half the time ragging on bottled lemon juice and frozen spinach. Honestly GROW UP,” she continued.
She ended her post: “Read this tweet on air, I dare you.”
Matt replied: “Wow! Are you always this angry?
“I didn’t know about the vitamins in frozen spinach and the jif lemon juice was also a genuine question!”
He added: “Can I suggest you watch something else rather than allow me to wind you up… life’s too short… which is more than apparent these days.”
Ruby replied: “I was looking forward to seeing genuinely affordable and accessible food! I think you came off flippant.”
During the episode, Matt jokingly queried Jack’s love for the bottled juice, which she described as the “lemon juice of all lemon juices”.
She told the host: “I love this lemon juice, I will not hear a bad word against it Matt. I’m not having it, it’s so much cheaper than buying fresh lemons. It will literally live forever in your fridge.”
Laughing, he replied: “What a perky analogy.”
