Power couple Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello just made headlines for announcing their breakup after two years of a romantic relationship. Sharing the news on Instagram, the couple intends to remain friends and emphasized their remaining bond. The two musicians have always shown support for each other, with Mendes once explaining how the Cinderella star gave him a new perspective on his physique.
Shawn Mendes would skip sleep to work out
Between his superstardom as a music artist and then landing a campaign with Calvin Klein that went viral, Mendes felt pressure to keep up appearances – literally. Having to stay in uber shape to live up to the expectations of a male model, the “Stitches” singer often skipped getting some shuteye to hit the gym.
“Some days I would have three hours of sleep, [because] I’d get up two hours early just to be able to work out,” he told GQ UK in November 2020, revealing the negative thoughts that drove him to keep up the demanding regimen. “If you don’t work out, you’re going to lose fans.”
Throughout his relationship with Cabello, Mendes saw the former Fifth Harmony star clap back at body shamers and adopt a focus on wellness rather than weight.
“So strong, so clear and confident with her [body] and so articulate and empathetic about other people’s,” he raved of Cabello. “It really changed my view of mine. It really changed my life… taking that extra few hours of sleep, instead of waking up to pump iron, is a better choice sometimes.”
Camila Cabello won’t change to ‘fit that mold’
In an August interview, Cabello described how Mendes would confide in her about his negative mindset regarding his body, and how sharing her journey with him made an impact.
“[He] would tell me like, ‘Dang, I have these kinds of thoughts or whatever,’” Cabello told Bustle. “I think that him talking about it has been a really big step in transforming that relationship with his body… I certainly feel obsessive, [like] I need to go to the gym, I need to do this, I need to lose weight quickly. I’ve felt like that. That’s the societal voice in your head.”
Cabello strives for balance over a number on the scale and places a priority on authenticity.
“You can work out a few hours a day and never eat carbs and whatever, but that’s just not a balanced life,” the “Havana” singer remarked. “That’s not what I want… I can’t change to fit that mold… I’m going to wear whatever, and if there’s paparazzi around, that sucks, but I’m not going to completely reroute who I am for that.”
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello remain ‘best friends’
Mendes and Cabello issued joint statements on Instagram on Nov. 17 to make their breakup official, yet vowed to keep a status as BFFs.
“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” the couple posted. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends, so we appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”
