Where the cast of The Matrix are now 23 years after the first movie came out

Jun 19, 2022

The first Matrix movie graced our screens in June 11th, 1999. Fronted by Keanu Reaves, the film illustrated the definition of sci-fi by exploring futuristic elements with the character of Thomas Anderson fighting against a computerised reality.

Having had four movies and a star-studded cast, it's no wonder the franchise has been branded as a classic.

But where are the cast today? While some have stayed at the forefront of celebrity life, others have taken a step back, keeping a low profile.

From Keanu Reeves to Joe Pantoliano, here's a round up of where you're favourite good and bad guys from the franchise are now…

Keanu Reeves

The main man himself, Keanu Reeves played the role of cybercriminal and computer programmer Neo.

Starring in all four of the movies, the film has gone down as one of his greatest projects. But where is he now? Now, that's certainly a trick question when it comes to the 57 year old.

His career continued to flourish following The Matrix and he's since starred in the likes of John Wick, Siberia and even Toy Story 4.

While his stardom has continued to grow, his love life hit tragedy back in the late '90s with his girlfriend of two years Jennifer Syme after their daughter Ava Archer Syme-Reeves was stillborn. The heartbreak led to their break up several weeks later and two years after this Jennifer died in a car accident.

Keanu has since kept his love life under wraps for the most part, but back in 2019 he went public with his relationship with Alexandra Grant, 49, who he has been with since 2018.

Carrie-Anne Moss

Carrie-Anne Moss, 54, played the role of Trinity in The Matrix and even starred in the 2021 The Matrix Resurrections.

Whilst it's fair to say she's best known for her role in the movie with her iconic leather gear and dark shades, she has starred in many other notable projects as well.

Carrie-Anne's other credits include movies such as Unthinkable with Samuel L. Jackson, Brain on Fire and Pompeii.

The actress has also been married to her husband Steven Roy since 1999 and they share three sons together – Owen, 18, Jaden, 16, and Frances, 13.

Laurence Fishburne

Laurence Fishburne was certainly a key role in The Matrix franchise. Playing the role of Morpheus, Laurence's character was known for his deep voice, black glasses and leather coat.

The 60 year old actor has starred in countless movies since and has even won three Emmy Awards.

In 2018 however, Laurence and his wife actress Gina Torres sadly divorced after 16 years of marriage.

The former couple share one child together Delilah Fishburne, 15, whilst Laurence is also the the father of his older children Montana Fishburne, born in 1991, and Langston Fishburne, 34.

Hugo Weaving

Hugo Weaving portrayed the iconic role of Agent Smith in The Matrix – depicting a sinister character with classic lines like: "You hear that Mr. Anderson?… That is the sound of inevitability… It is the sound of your death… Good bye, Mr. Anderson."

The now-62 year old actor has certainly had a successful movie career appearing in other films such as Love Me, Patrick Melrose and Mr Corman.

Whilst Hugo's cast mates have continued to change over the years as he takes on new projects, one thing that has remained the same is his long-time partner Katrina Greenwood.

The two have been together since 1984 and share two children together – Harry 33, and Holly, 29.

Jada Pinkett Smith

Another person on this list that has certainly not gone out of sight is Jada Pinkett Smith. Whilst the actress, 50, did not star in the first 1999 Matrix movie, she did play the role of Niobe in the three sequels.

As well as having a list of movies she's starred in, Jada is also married to one of the most famous men in Hollywood, Will Smith.

The pair have been married since 1997 and share son Jaden, 23, and daughter Willow, 21, together.

No stranger to being in the headlines, the Smiths were recently at the centre when Will Smith, 53, smacked comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars, due to Chris saying a joke at Jada's expense.

Will has since been banned from the Oscars for 10 years.

Joe Pantoliano

Another iconic bad guy in The Matrix, Cypher, was played by none other than Joe Pantoliano. Backstabbing Cypher switched sides after realising he should've taken the blue pill and had epic one-liners, including one very intense speech about steak.

He said: "I know this steak doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realise? Ignorance is bliss."

Joe, 70, has had an incredibly successful career since The Matrix, starring in the likes of Christopher Nolan's Memento and Daredevil.

He's also been in The Sopranos, playing the role of Ralph Cifaretto from 2001 to 2004, and more recently Sense 8 as Michael Gorski.

After a five-year marriage to Morgan Kester, who he shares son Marco with, he later went on to marry Nancy Sheppard.

He and Nancy are parents to Danniella, Isabella, Bobby and Melody. Joe is also dad to daughter Michelle.

In 2020, Joe suffered a "severe head injury" after being struck by a car in Connecticut. He's since appeared to make a full recovery.

Harold Perrineau

Harold Perrineau played the beloved character Link in the The Matrix series, serving as the ship's pilot and operator after replacing Tank and Dozer.

But The Matrix isn't the only globally famous production Harold, 58, is known for as he later starred in Lost – playing the role of Michael Dawson between 2004-2010.

He also appeared in the Constantine TV series, which was based off of the movie Keanu Reeves starred in as a the leading character.

Harold has been married to former actress and model Brittany Robinson since 2002 and the pair have three daughters together, Holiday, Wynter and actressAurora, who has been in Prodigal Son.
