The sought-after Madvillainy sequel from Madlib and the late MF DOOM was supposedly “85 percent done,” as disclosed by Stones Throw Records founder Peanut Butter Wolf.
In a recent interview with Pete Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds for their Juan Ep is Dead podcast, Wolf confirmed that DOOM was indeed working on the highly-anticipated followup. “DOOM was always telling me ‘It’s 85% done, it’s 85% done.’ That was the magic number,” he said, adding that although the rapper did send him 11 songs in 2009, the supervillain wanted to hold off on any releases until “a few more songs” were finished.
During Wolf’s waiting, however, verses would appear on other people’s albums or leak online, and at one point the label founder was unsure of which material could actually appear on Madvillainy 2. “I got a little frustrated,” he admitted, “and I was just like, you know, ‘It’s gonna happen when it’s gonna happen.’ I don’t wanna be the guy to force creativity or anything.” Wolf and his team currently have no idea what to do with DOOM’s tracks, but they do have approval from the artist’s team and family to compile the material into one project.
