Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex are no longer senior royals. They put their royal exit into motion in January 2020 and now reside in Meghan’s home state of California. From the duke and duchess’ Montecito mansion, the couple’s raising their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, and continuing their charity work. In light of their departure, the British royal family’s lost a key trait Meghan brought to the Firm.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry left royal life behind in 2020

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their royal exit on January 8, 2020. In an Instagram post featuring a photo of them from their 2017 engagement announcement, Meghan and Harry revealed their plans to “carve out a progressive new role” in the royal family that involved them becoming financially independent.

Meghan and Harry spent the next few months transitioning out of their roles as senior royals. They said goodbye to their staff, mapped out what their new roles would look like, and attended their final royal engagements. During their last official royal event, Westminster Abbey’s Commonwealth Day service, they had a rather tense moment with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

But despite the rumors of a feud between Harry and his brother, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, Meghan and Harry moved forward. They officially stepped down as senior royals at the end of March 2020.

Royal family doesn’t have anyone with Meghan Markle’s ‘charisma’

Sean Smith, the author of Meghan Misunderstood, shared what he feels the Firm is lacking in a January 2021 interview with Daily Star. Specifically, the appeal and relatability the Duchess of Sussex brought to the royal family.

“Historians would have you believe the royal family are boring at times, but Meghan Markle is not a dull person, she has a great deal of charisma that is now sadly missing in the royal family,” Smith said.

He continued, saying the 39-year-old brought something unique to the royal family that no one else has been able to provide in her absence.

“This is a woman of substance and that is not how she has been represented and hopefully there is still time for people to realize that,” Smith said. “I don’t want to knock members of the royal family, Prince William, Kate, and other members too, but Meghan has a different life experience than them.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are slowly rolling out Archewell

Meghan and Harry have moved forward with the use of Archewell after being prohibited from using Sussex Royal. They delayed the launch but have gradually been releasing details about Archewell.

For now, it includes Archewell Audio, Archewell Productions, and the Archewell Foundation. In September 2020, the couple announced they’d signed a contract with Netflix. Meghan and Harry inked a deal with the streaming giant involving documentaries, docu-series, feature films, scripted shows, and children’s programming.

They also have a Spotify podcast. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released the first episode of Archewell Audio in December 2020. It featured an adorable comment from Archie and some flirting from Harry and Meghan.

For now, the couple continues to work on Archewell. Meanwhile, William and his wife, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, are the main senior royals in the public eye.
