This Black Friday, we’re going to be doing our Christmas shopping a little differently to usual.

We’re still going to be shopping up a storm, though, with The Shopping for Christmas study predicting that we’ll be spending around £7.5 billion online and on the high street today in the UK.

But, before we part with our cash on the annual day of sales (albeit from the comfort of our sofas) it’s worth noting that not all bargains are created equal.

While you may find that the discounts look tempting, your ‘add to cart’ finger could be overly eager.

Independent review company Which? test out products from across the spectrum, giving certain items a ‘do not buy’ rating if they don’t represent quality and value for money.

Some of the items in this year’s Black Friday sales may be marked down by a lot, but are they worth the cash according to Which?

For example, the Marshall Major III wireless Bluetooth headphones at Currys PC World have been reduced from £129 to £49, which is a 62% saving. However, they’re also on the ‘do not buy’ list from Which?

Other items that are on sale but aren’t recommended by the reviewer include:

  • Russell Hobbs Luna 23221 2 slice toaster from AO.com – down from £49 to £29
  • Beko VCS5125AB vacuum cleaner from AO.com – down from £89 to £69
  • Maxi Cosi Beryl car seat from John Lewis – down from £319.99 to £255
  • Bush 60185FFWTD fridge freezer from Argos – down from £320 to £290
  • HiSense 65A7100FTUK LED TV from Currys PC World – down from £549 to £499

Reasons why different items made it onto the ‘don’t buy’ list vary. For example, the Russell Hobbs Luna toaster was said by Which? to produce ‘pale and uneven toast’ with a slider that is ‘stiff and hard to move’.

The Beko vacuum was found to be ‘cumbersome’, and Which? said that the filter ‘did a poor job of trapping small particles when tested’.

Every buying decision will be based on your own preferences and needs, but it’s important to look at reviews (both independent and otherwise) rather than simply being taken in my the savings.

If you’re spending money – particularly large amounts – you want to be sure that you’re getting items that’ll last.
