Celebs having strained divorces as men try to 'gain control'

Apr 28, 2022

Rise in PDA (that’s Public Displays of Acrimony!) As Olivia Wilde is served custody papers on stage, experts reveal how stars like Jason Sudeikis and Kanye West are leading the trend of openly ‘shaming’ exes in a bid to ‘regain control’

  • Olivia Wilde, 38, appeared flustered as she was served custody papers on-stage
  • Sources close to Sudeikis said he didn’t realize she would be served on-stage
  • Comes amid a rise in public displays of acrimony from men seeking divorces
  • Kanye West has for months been lashing out at estranged wife Kim Kardashian

Experts have warned how male celebrities like Jason Sudeikis and Kanye West are leading the trend towards strained divorces as men try to ‘punish’ their exes publicly in a bid to ‘regain control.’

Olivia WIlde, 38, received legal documents from her ex and the father of her children Sudeikis while live on stage at the 2022 CinemaCon – where she was discussing her new movie, which sparked her romance with her current boyfriend Harry Styles.

Variety has claimed that Sudeikis did not know Wilde would be served the papers in such a public and humiliating way.

However it’s not the first time that a male celebrity has behaved acrimoniously with a former partner in recent months.

Kanye West has for months been lashing out at his estranged wife Kim Kardashian on social media for her parenting skills and choice to date SNL comedian Pete Davidson.

Experts have now revealed how the male partners appear to want to ‘punish’ their partners, with eHarmony relationship expert Rachael Lloyd telling FEMAIL the ‘compulsion to strike back and seize the higher ground is more compelling for some males’.

The relationship expert said: ‘Both cases carry signs of PDA (public displays of acrimony) whereby a hurt or heartbroken spouse, externalises their wounds for all the world to see.

‘And, to some, it might appear that Sudeikis and West have a need to control the narrative, and in some way punish the women who left them.’

Rachael, who works for www.eharmony.co.uk, said: ‘The fact that Olivia Wilde was served divorce papers by ex-husband Jason Sudeikis while she was on stage at an industry event may have been an extraordinary accident of timing. But, it has all the ingredients of revenge served cold.

‘Although Sudeikis’ representatives were keen to apportion blame for Wilde’s public humiliation to his legal team, it’s no secret that he’s been left reeling by the poker-hot romance between his estranged wife and Harry Styles.

‘So, could it be that he felt he needed to reassert his sense of territory? Or at least project the humiliation and pain he may be feeling onto to his glamorous ex?

‘Either way, he could well be regretting the dramatic incident now, as it makes world headlines.’

eHarmony relationship expert Rachael Lloyd explained how the ‘compulsion to strike back and seize the higher ground is more compelling for some males’ when it comes to messy divorces (pictured Kim and Kanye in 2020)

She continued: ‘It’s important to remember when couples break up or divorce, they obviously navigate feelings of deep grief. And that grief often includes prolonged periods of rage.

‘But while the rage is ultimately temporary, public attacks leave much longer digital footprints.’

Rachael compared the act to Kanye’s behaviour over the last few months, saying: ‘Similarly, Kanye West refused to move on gracefully when ex-wife Kim Kardashian pushed ahead with their divorce.

‘From cryptic Twitter posts about the heartbreak he was battling, to remarks about her apparent lack of parenting skills, West wanted the world to know he wasn’t happy about the breakup. Or the fact Kim was moving on romantically.

And it’s not always the men who are airing the dirty laundry in public!

The ex: In January 2021, she publicly confirmed that her marriage with estranged husband Ioan Gruffudd had broken down (Pictured together in June 2018)

Alice Evans, who shares daughters Ella, 12, and Elsie, eight, with husband of 13 years Ioan Gruffudd confirmed their split in a series of furious tweets posted in January 2021.

She has since documented every toxic turn in their subsequent divorce proceedings across social media, and repeatedly slated him for being in a relationship with Bianca Wallace.

In February this year, the Welsh actor submitted 113 pages of abusive text messages, emails and social media posts as he applied for a restraining order against his ex, claiming she threatened to do to him ‘what Amber Heard did to Johnny Depp’ and paint him as a drug-addicted abuser.

Abusive text messages revealed how she had laid into his new girlfriend Bianca, calling her a ‘vixen’ and telling him she has ‘your nuts stuck in her veneers’.

In his court filing, Ioan claimed he told Alice he wanted out of the marriage in August 2020 and since then, she has harassed him with hundreds of unanswered text messages, abusive emails and social media posts – many of which he included in the filing.

Alice rejected all the claims made by Ioan in the restraining order application.

New woman: Ioan had been married to Alice for 14 years before he filed for divorce in March. Their messy split centres around his new relationship with Bianca Wallace (pictured)

‘He insisted he was doing his best to patch up the relationship, whilst chipping away at Kim’s reputation in the Twittersphere.’

She continued: ‘Rejection is super hard, and divorce can make even the strongest person feel broken and powerless.

‘And while women obviously struggle with these feelings, they may be even more challenging for men who are raised in a culture that expects them to be strong and resilient.

‘Therefore, it’s possible the compulsion to strike back and seize the higher ground is more compelling for some males.’

However the relationship expert said it wasn’t always a good idea to seek revenge on a partner, no matter how much hurt the relationship could have caused.

She said: ‘Lashing out publicly, doesn’t help either party.

‘It not only increases acrimony but can leave the attacker with a horrible emotional hangover.’

Meanwhile Rachael said it wasn’t always men who seek revenge on a partner, explaining: ‘In all fairness, women can also press the self-destruct button in divorces. Alice Evans has waged war on her ex for months.

‘Sadly, it doesn’t appear to have brought her any resolution.’

Female empowerment coach and relationship expert, Gifty Enright, who focuses on gender battles agreed, saying: ‘Celebrities washing the dirty laundry in public is not new but a rather disturbing trend now of publicly shaming the women involved is rather disturbing.

‘This misogynistic twist of publicly striking at the woman at the place where she feels her at her most powerful and watch her unravel, as in the case of Olivia Wilde where she was on stage in front of 4000 industry executives, shows an ex desperate to show that he is the powerful one.’

Tina Wilson, Relationship Expert and Wingman founder suggested the aggressive tactic from men in the public eye could be an effort to gain custody of their children.

She said: ‘This is a case where the lawyers always win. I would say that divorce and legalities regarding custody of children between a separated couple is never easy to deal with.

‘The pandemic has put a strain on people’s relationships and many couples have realised they don’t want to be with each other anymore which is why we are seeing more strained divorces.

‘With many courts in the past mostly favouring the mother of the child/children, some men are being more aggressive with divorce proceedings to gain 50/50 custody of children.’

In recent months, there have been several moments where A-list celebrities have struck out at their partners amid divorce proceedings.

Fans expressed concern that Kanye West may not have his mental health in check when he harassed his ex Kim and her new boyfriend Pete over and over on social media, causing the singer to be suspended from Instagram for 24 hours in March.

In a music video Kanye showed a claymation version of Pete being buried alive.

Kanye has also accused Kim of not being a good parent by letting North go on TikTok and he also said that she was keeping the kids from him, which she has denied.

Meanwhile Olivia was in the middle of a presentation for 4,100 film industry executives about her upcoming thriller Don’t Worry Darling in Las Vegas on Tuesday night, when she received legal documents from her former partner.

He is best known for his starring role in Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso.

Deadline sources claimed on Wednesday that the manila envelope that was placed on stage at Caesars Palace’s The Colosseum, contained custody papers from the 46-year-old Emmy winner.

King Felipe VI’s sister Infanta Cristina of Spain, 54, left, and her husband of 25 years Iñaki Urdangarin, 54, have announced they have split up (pictured together in 2019 in Vitoria)

Earlier this year, the Spanish magazine Lecturas shared a picture of Urdangarin holding hands with another woman. But sources told Hola! the snap had not come as a shock for King Felipe VI’s sister

And Variety has claimed that Sudeikis did not know Wilde would be served the papers in such a public and humiliating way. The actress is currently dating pop star Styles, 28, who she met while she was directing her upcoming thriller, in which he stars alongside Florence Pugh.

A source told the publication: ‘Papers were drawn up to establish jurisdiction relating to the children of Ms. Wilde and Mr. Sudeikis.

‘Mr. Sudeikis had no prior knowledge of the time or place that the envelope would have been delivered as this would solely be up to the process service company involved and he would never condone her being served in such an inappropriate manner.’

It had initially been reported that the documents were an unsolicited script sent by a fan in the hopes of receiving Wilde’s attention.

Meanwhile Justin Hartley left his ex-wife Chriselle to learn of their divorce after reading about it in TMZ

Other stars to have publicly aired their dirty laundry include Infanta Cristina of Spain and her husband Iñaki Urdangarin, who announced their split in January.

Disgraced businessman Urdangarin, 54, was pictured holding hands with another woman, allegedly an unnamed co-worker at the Imaz & Asociados law firm, in a photo published by the Spanish magazine Lecturas.

Urdangarin married Infanta Cristina, the sister of King Felipe VI, in 1997. In 2018, he was sentenced to five years in prison for embezzlement and money laundering in excess of £4.5 million through his non-profit organisation, the Noos Institute.

Meanwhile Justin Hartley left his ex-wife Chriselle to learn of their divorce after reading about it in TMZ.

Justin and Chrishell were married in 2017, after having begun dating in January 2014.

In November 2019, Justin filed for divorce and listed it due to irreconcilable differences, listing their separation date as July 8, 2019 – despite attending several events together – even the week before he filed, TMZ reported.
