HAGGLING can save you £120 a year on your broadband contract, says a consumer watchdog.

But almost half of internet customers believe it is too much hassle or think they will not get a bargain, research by Which? reveals.

Of the 51 per cent who did negotiate, three-quarters were offered an incentive, discount or better deal.

Seven in ten who switched provider found the process was straightforward, even though a quarter experienced time without an internet connection.

But results, from the poll of 5,000 broadband customers, varied across the providers. Some 38 per cent of Vodafone clients said they were paying less than when they first signed up.

Yet 30 per cent of Virgin Media users revealed they are paying more. Natalie Hitchins, from Which?, said: “Many of us obediently pay our bills throughout the year without ever giving it a second thought.

“But just one phone call or online chat could save you £120 this Christmas. There are bigger savings for those willing to switch to a new provider.”
