If you love to follow cats on Instagram then you need to know about Belarus – the cross-eyed kitty who loves the camera.

Thousands of people have fallen in love with the goofy troublemaker, who lives in San Francisco.

It makes sense that the three-year-old is a social media star, considering that’s how he got a start in life with his forever family.

His now-owner Rachel was following various rescue accounts on Instagram when she spotted the silly looking cat, thought to be a Nebelung breed.

‘I’d been following rescue accounts for about a year, with the hope of eventually adopting a cat or senior dog,’ Rachel tells Metro.co.uk.

‘When I saw Belarus’s face (and eyes) I immediately fell in love. I moved meetings around to be able to visit the shelter (San Francisco Animal Care and Control) that day.’

Rachel had to get in line though, as the shelter received more than 500,000 impressions on Facebook with many willing to fly the cat across the country for the right home.

Eventually, Rachel won and was contacted later that evening, taking him home the same day.

Now she documents life with Belarus on his Instagram page, which has more than 200,000 followers.

‘He’s just the absolute sweetest,’ she says

‘He’s incredibly gentle and careful while walking around the house.

‘When I adopted him, he was around a year old and was still pretty playful and kitten-like. As he’s gotten older, he’s become a huge cuddler. He’s extremely curious and interactive.

‘He always wants to know what’s going on around the house.’

His googly eyes are due to strabismus –  a vision condition that prevents the eyes being aligned at the same time. It’s better known as being cross-eyed.

Rachel is unsure whether Belarus was born with the condition or developed it due to injury.

She adds: ‘Regardless, he seems to see just fine and loves juggling balls around the house. He can also do high fives!

‘He’s pretty hilarious in his normal life, which is how we get so many great photos and videos to post. He hates the smell of tea or coffee and will try to “bury” any mug containing it.’

Rachel is blown away by the amount of love Belarus gets online and enjoys all the sweet comments.

She tells us: ‘It’s been really wonderful to see the comments we get on how our account has impacted others.

‘I think that’s the most special part. For example, people who have used Belarus’s page to cheer up sick or dying family members.

‘People have also been inspired to adopt and have started to volunteer or donate to their local shelter.’
