DEAR DEIDRE: MY parents are nasty to my children and I’m wondering if I should keep them away.
Like most kids, my boys want to tell their grandparents what they have been up to – especially my dad, as the boys’ father walked out of our lives. I’m a single mum of 28. My parents are in their fifties.

My seven-year-old is mad about football but Dad hates it and puts him down. My youngest son loves swimming but won’t tell them about it now. Dad had a go at him recently, asking why he had nothing to say. My kids ask why Nan and Grandad are always so cross.
DEIDRE SAYS: Tell your parents your sons are upset by how they speak to them and explore what lies behind it.
Are they stressed over other issues? Does your dad feel he has to “toughen up” the boys since their dad isn’t around?
