Among all the videos of teens dancing around to various hit songs, TikTok is actually home to some quite useful beauty ideas, like this kirby grip eyeliner hack and the super popular dressing gown curls trick. And if there’s ever a time to try them out, it’s now.
As its name suggests, the hack, which went viral after user Bri Harmon demonstrated it to her amazed followers, involves using a dressing gown belt to create heat-free and perfectly formed curls. Bouncy hair without the effort? Yes please.
Naturally we needed to see if it lives up to standards, so OK!'s deputy beauty editor Zoe dismantled her dressing gown in the name of beauty journalism to put the method to the test…
Zoe tries the dressing gown curls hack
I’d just like to say that I feel FAR too old to be involving myself in TikTok. Until lockdown, I referred to it as "The Tok", and had absolutely no intention of ever signing up. But boredom eventually got the better of me and I snuck on to see what all the fuss was about.
A word of caution; if you value your free time, do not get started with this app, because now I can’t stop. Which is why I found myself getting up early on a Thursday morning to stick a dressing gown belt in my hair, to see if it could give me some cute curls.
Annoyingly, it did. If you fancy giving it a go, here’s the seriously easy method on how to do it…
How to create dressing gown curls
Step 1: Spritz hair with water
Alternatively you can just comb some through your hair to make it damp. You want your hair to set around the belt and it will do this better when it dries from slightly wet.
Step 2: Put the belt on your head
I found it easiest to clip it in place at the top to stop it from moving around during the styling. It was at this stage that my boyfriend asked me why I had a pink worm lying on my head. Reassuring.
Step 3: Start twisting the hair
This is what I like about this hack – you don’t need to have any fancy braiding skills here. All you have to do is take the front section of hair and twist it round the tie, then pick up another lower section of hair and add it to that bunch – then twist. Keep going right till the bottom then secure with a band.
Step 4: Leave to set
It works best when you sleep on it, as the longer it’s in place, the better your curls will be formed. If you’re in a rush, or don’t like things in your hair while you sleep, I can recommend blasting with a hairdryer then leaving for an hour.
Step 5: Remove and admire
This is the best part – unravelling the look. Once the belt is out, comb through the curls with your fingers and spritz with some hairspray to keep them from falling out.
My verdict? I’m so lazy in the mornings that I often wake up after promising I’d style my hair for the day, and just never do it. This hack is so quick to do that even I can manage it before going to bed. I find the curls also hold their shape from this method better than they do with my tongs, and I think it must be about the time they have to set while I sleep.
