The Grammys may be music’s biggest night — but when it comes to bold, boundary-pushing fashion moments, the VMAs are where it’s at.
MTV’s always-outrageous awards show is famous for its scandalous style statements, and the looks on Sunday night’s red carpet at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center were no exception; Megan Fox showed up practically naked, while the bottom half of Normani’s look was less of a skirt than a belt.
Other style stars stood out without exposing much skin at all — like Lil Nas X in his sparkling purple suit, Camila Cabello in her elegant bow-tied ballgown and Olivia Rodrigo in her vintage Versace couture.
Below, see all the best-dressed stars from the 2021 VMAs.
Lil Nas X
The “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” hitmaker channeled his inner Prince — or was it Rick James? — in a custom lilac Atelier Versace suit sprinkled with crystals and finished with a sweeping train. Bonus points for that Jheri curl mullet, too.
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly
The “Jennifer’s Body” beauty somehow managed to top her cutout-covered Mugler LBD from the Billboard Music Awards with this nearly-nude number by the same fashion house, which was styled with an embellished thong.
Mirroring the red embellishments on his date’s dress, meanwhile, MGK rocked a shimmering red Dolce & Gabbana suit. These two do love a matching moment, after all.
The pro dancer, who always strikes just the right balance of sexy and sophisticated, showed off her “Wild Side” in this white-hot vegan leather set by Patrycja Pagas.
The teen queen looked ready for round two of “Sour Prom” in this coral vintage Atelier Versace gown wrapped in fuchsia tulle. The dress hails from the luxury label’s Spring 2001 couture collection — making it older than the “Drivers License” singer herself — and Rodrigo topped it off with some oh-so-Y2K butterfly earrings.
Viva Valentino! The “Star-Crossed” crooner looked absolutely fabulous in her bright purple mini and matching feather hat. Those on-trend opera gloves might’ve felt like overkill at a different event, but at the VMAs, more is more.
The “Cinderella” star fittingly went for a fairytale-worthy gown in the form of this corseted, color-blocked Alexis Mabille Haute Couture creation. We can’t get enough of that super-sized bow — or her matching makeup.
From “Complicated” to “Clueless.” With its heart-shaped cutout and bedazzled bandeau, Lavigne’s pink plaid Area pantsuit put a playful twist on her signature punk style.
