If you consider yourself extremely online, or even just somewhat online, you’ve probably heard all about singer-songwriter Demi Lovato and their high-profile feud with the popular frozen yogurt chain The Bigg Chill.
Per Vanity Fair, the story goes that after a trip to get froyo, Lovato fired off an Instagram post in which they accused the establishment of “triggering” them and others who are recovering from eating disorders. “Finding it extremely hard to order froyo from @thebiggchillofficial when you have to walk past tons of sugar free cookies/other diet foods before you get to the counter,” Demi penned hastily before adding, “Do better please,” alongside the hashtag, “#dietculturevultures.” YIKES.
While some might have been willing to bend the knee to such a high profile celebrity, it was clear from the jump that The Big Chill wasn’t going to be pushed around. “We carry items for Diabetics, Celiac disease, Vegan and of course have many indulgent items as well,” the company promptly responded in regards to the criticism. Eventually, the online spat ended after Lovato seemingly backpedaled, explaining that their intentions had been “misconstrued.” But alas, this was only the latest in a long string of public feuds Lovato has engaged in. Keep reading after the jump for a timeline of the star’s very public spats.
Demi Lovato and Kathy Griffin went at it in March 2014 and June 2017
Demi Lovato’s beef with comedian Kathy Griffin runs deep. As reported by The Hollywood Gossip, Kathy Griffin was the first to fire shots at Lovato way back in March 2014. When Griffin was asked on Twitter who she thought of as “the biggest celebrity douche,” Griffin promptly tweeted back, “Probably Debbie Lovato Plus she should calm the f down bout Lady Gaga gettin barfed on.” SHOTS FIRED. WE REPEAT, SHOTS FIRED.
As it turns out, however, it was Lovato who eventually had the last word. In 2017, Griffin found herself in some pretty hot water after posing with a gory, decapitated replica of former President Donald Trump’s head. Backlash from both sides of the aisle was swift, and Griffin found herself in the midst of a PR nightmare. Immediately, she went on the defensive, citing that she was being bullied and silenced by “old white guys.”
Lovato, however, saw things much differently. “I find it funny when bullies play the victims,” they tweeted. Then in a subsequent cryptic tweet, they added, “Oops. I spilled my tea.” Something tells us these two won’t be meeting for any other kind of tea anytime soon…
Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift have a rocky past
Demi Lovato first appeared to criticize Taylor Swift in February 2016 after the princess of pop made a staggering $250,000 donation to singer and rapper Kesha in an effort to take on music producer Dr. Luke in a legal dispute. “Take something to Capitol Hill or actually speak out about something and then I’ll be impressed,” Lovato tweeted, with many fans assuming the message was about the hefty donation. Via Billboard, Lovato later clarified their tweet in an Instagram comment, writing, “I didn’t shade Taylor … I’m just tired of seeing women use ‘women empowerment’ and ‘feminism’ to further brands without actually being the ones that have the uncomfortable conversations.”
But in November 2016, Lovato seemingly doubled down on their criticism of Swift. “I think that having a song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down, that’s not women’s empowerment,” they said during a Glamour interview.
More recently, though, the two stars may have buried the hatchet. In October 2020, Lovato told CNN that Swift was “a perfect example” of the double standard celebrities are held to. “For, years she got trashed because she wasn’t taking a stance and wasn’t standing up for these rights, and she kind of took a back seat. And now she’s become very political, and there are people that are unhappy with that, too,” Lovato said to the outlet. Never mind the fact that they seemed to be among those critics in the first place.
Demi Lovato called out Nicki Minaj in May 2016
One person Demi Lovato would rather not run into on another red carpet? Rapper Nicki Minaj.
As reported by PopSugar, both Lovato and Minaj were treated to a night of glitz and glam at the 2016 Met Gala, as they were both dressed by acclaimed fashion designer Jeremy Scott. Alas, the night wasn’t all that Lovato had expected. Upon Minaj posting a photo of the threesome on the red carpet — one that Lovato was noticeably not tagged in — Lovato took to their own Instagram to convey their thoughts on the evening. In a since-deleted post, Lovato shared a photo of what appears to be Minaj serving Lovato some serious side-eye alongside a caption that read, “This picture pretty much summed up my first and probably last met #cool #sof*ckingawkward #notforme #sweatpants #forensicfiles #whatsgood p.s. some of y’all need to learn how to take a joke.. I’m obviously laughing at the fact that 1. I look incredibly awkward and 2. That the shade being thrown in this picture actually gives me life.” YIKES.
During a 2018 interview with Billboard, Lovato provided further insight into their experience at the Met Gala. “This one celebrity was a complete b*tch and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink,” they confessed. Maybe Minaj really wasn’t too keen on Lovato, or perhaps she was just unknowingly serving a serious case of RBF? The world may never know.
Demi Lovato fired shots at Selena Gomez in May 2020
In the May 2020 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Demi Lovato sent shockwaves around the world when they revealed that they and former Disney star Selena Gomez no longer keep in touch with each other. Whilst referring to an Instagram post Gomez made in which she publicly applauded Lovato for her highly anticipated comeback into show biz, they even went as far as to question their former best pal’s intentions. “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so [the Instagram post] felt … ,” Lovato divulged before eventually trailing off. “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best,” they carefully added.
Later, however, a source worked overtime in an effort to assure the masses that there was “no beef” between the former friends. “Demi has no beef with Selena and there is no animosity between them,” the source maintained to Us Weekly, before adding “They’re just not friends at this point.”
We’ll always have Disney, we guess…. sigh.
