The NAACP Image Awards takes place in February 2022
Some of the biggest names in movies and music are earned awards and recognition from the NAACP Image Awards. In January 2022, the award ceremony announced this year’s list of nominees, including well-known artists like Lil Nas X, Saweetie, Beyoncé, Chloe, and Drake.
“We are thrilled to recognize this year’s nominees, who have all brought dynamic, entertaining, and thought-provoking content to our attention through their incredible work in film, television, music, and more,” Image Awards Committee chairman Karen Boykin-Towns said, according to Hip Hop DX.
Beyoncé, Lil Nas X, and Drake earned NAACP Image Award nominations
Nominations for Outstanding New Artist include Cynthia Erivo, Jimmie Allen, Saweetie, Tems, and Zoe Wees. In addition to collaborating with McDonald’s for the Saweetie Meal and Cher for a MAC campaign, Saweetie became a social media star with songs like “Best Friend.”
The artist appeared on the official soundtrack for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, later performing at the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball. Nominated in the Outstanding Male Artist category for the NAACP awards, Drake is one of the world’s best-known rappers. This artist released Certified Lover Boy in 2021.
He also created the record label OVO Sound, partnered with the Toronto Raptors, and co-founded the gaming organization 100 Thieves. Other artists nominated include Anthony Hamilton, Givēon, J. Cole, and Lil Nas X.
Also nominated in the Outstanding Male Artist category, as well as Outstanding Hip Hop/Rap Song, is “That’s What I Want” musician Lil Nas X. First rising in popularity with “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X solidified his reputation in the music industry with his debut album, Montero.
“Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow earned a Grammy nomination in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category. “Montero (Call Me By Your Name” earned a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year. Lil Nas X is also a member of the LGBTQ community, incorporating that aspect of himself into the music videos for “That’s What I Want” and “Industry Baby.”
What movies earned ‘Outstanding Motion Picture’ nominations at the 2022 NAACP Image Awards?
Outstanding Female Artist nominees include H.E.R., Ari Lennox, Beyoncé, Chloe, and Jazmine Sullivan. 2021 marked a significant year for Chloe, who released her first single as a solo artist, “Have Mercy.”
Judas and the Black Messiah, King Richard, Respect, The Harder They Fall, and The United States vs. Billie Holiday earned Outstanding Motion Picture nominations. BET broadcasts the award ceremony on Sat. Feb 26. The NAACP is scheduled to honor award recipients in non-televised categories from Feb. 21 to Feb. 23.
