Actor Toby Kirkup, who played roles in BBC's Peaky Blinders and ITV's Emmerdale, died alone hours after being sent home from hospital, an inquest has heard.

The performer who was star of stage and screen was admitted to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary on August 29 after he had experienced a tingling sensation in his arm and chest pains.

At the time, medical professionals diagnosed Kirkup with gastritis and sent him back home to Titanic Mills in Slaithwaite where he lived.

However, Bradford Coroner’s court heard that Toby's condition worsened and he began to vomit.

The actor then suffered a cardiac arrest shortly after.

He was 48 at the time of death.

Kirkup's post mortem discovered that the star had passed away from natural causes. Despite this, his family had growing concerns over the treatment that he was given by doctors.

During the inquest, coroners officer Catherine Toner told assistant coroner, Katy Dickinson, that Kirkup had also been dealing with drug and alcohol related issues.

The hearing has now been adjourned until September 30.

Following on from his death Kirkup, who was known for his role as a police officer in BBC’s Peaky Blinders obituary was published.

It read: "On the 29th August 2020 Toby died suddenly at home in Huddersfield aged 48. Beloved son of Philip and Pamela younger brother of Dominic and Sammy. Much loved father to Isabella and dear friend to many.

"Private service at Church of St Thomas, Thurstonland on Monday 21st of September followed by private committal at Huddersfield Crematorium.

"Family flowers only please. Donation in lieu of ACA UK."

Kirkup studied drama at the University of Huddersfield and as well as acting he also worked as a writer, stagehand and TV presenter.

The actor also had theatre credits and was involved in stage productions of Richard III and Henry V for the Manchester-based Ragged School Drama.

Since his passing, friends and family have paid their tributes and respects to the late star.

His friends and family also described Kirkup as "always pleasant, polite and friendly" and "always lovely to speak to", reports Yorkshire Live.
