Here's How Aly & AJ's Latest Partnership With the Trevor Project Came to Be

Jun 30, 2019

Music is a powerful medium. Artists have always communicated messages, political or otherwise, through their work. Today, there are more opportunities than ever before to join up with an organization and spread positivity and support. Pop duo Aly & AJ did this when they teamed up with the Trevor Project during their Sanctuary tour. Here’s how it happened.

Aly & AJ just finished a whirlwind U.S. tour

For the last two months, Aly & AJ have been all of over the U.S. touring for their EP Sanctuary. They visited many different states and towns, singing their new music and even some of their old stuff from their Disney Channel days.

As half of the tour took place in June, which is Pride Month, it was only fitting that they supported the LGBTQ+ community during it. So they partnered with the Trevor Project, a suicide hotline for queer and questioning youth founded over 20 years ago, which has begun to do more and more over time to help the community nationwide.

This is how their partnership came to be

“We were introduced to the Trevor Project through our dear friend Raymond Braun who’s an amazing activist and has known us for the majority of our lives. We always turn to him for advice and education,” said Aly in a recent interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “He was like, “I really think you guys should partner with Trevor Project. There’s a lot of LGBTQ fans in your audience and I think this would be a huge help for them.”

They were on board immediately. “AJ and I were like, “Done! We’re so game.” So we partnered up with them and a company called Propeller to basically help get as many people per night to sign a petition to end conversion therapy, which they created. And also just to donate to the Trevor Project on top of that.”

They plan to continue their efforts on the European leg of their tour

As predicted, their audience was supportive. “It was really incredible to see the response every night. People were so enthusiastic in the crowd. And everyone got on their phones and donated. It was really cool,” said Aly.

Now that they’re headed to Europe for the month of July, they’re going to continue what they started in the U.S. “We’re going to bring it over in Europe as well. Even though I know the Trevor Project is a U.S.-based organization, they do work all over,” said Aly.

AJ added, “And their hotline exists all over the world!” Aly continued, “Yeah. Which is incredible. They provided a suicide hotline as well. It’s really amazing.”

On how their music has evolved over time

If you haven’t yet heard Aly & AJ’s new music, there’s no time like the present. They know their audience: fans are into the new stuff, but also want to hear the old. But they told Showbiz Cheat Sheet that feel as though people are truly embracing their more recent material.

“There’s a time and place for the new music and it should get it’s time to shine,” said AJ. “I feel like it’s getting that. Fans at these live shows are really knowing the new EPs and they’re there to sing with them. They know the lyrics. They care about the music. So it’s a blend of old and new that I think is really special. The fact that we’re getting attention for both is really what Aly and I appreciate.”
