Love Island star Zara Holland has escaped jail but been hit with a £4,417 fine for breaking Barbados coronavirus laws.

Zara, 25, was summoned to appear before District A magistrates' court after attempting to flee the country when her boyfriend tested positive for coronavirus.

Before the court, Holland pleaded guilty to "contravening the emergency Covid-19 curfew directive".

If found guilty, Holland faced fines of up to £18,000, but was handed just a £4,417 ($12,000 Barbados dollars) fine in the ruling.

The former Miss Great Britain had been accused of "contravening the emergency Covid-19 curfew directive" in Barbados by leaving "her hotel premises without reasonable explanation" while being "a person in quarantine".

Holland and her boyfriend Elliott Love, 30, underwent coronavirus tests upon arrival in Barbados on December 27 and were instructed to isolate at the island's Love Sugar Bay hotel.

However, when Love's test came back as positive, the pair headed to the airport to escape the island.

Their hotel room was subsequently found empty.

Holland and Love were intercepted by police at Grantley Adams International Airport when they attempted to catch a flight back to the UK.

The ITV2 star has been isolating in the nearby Hilton hotel, while her partner was taken to the Paragon military base, which is doubling as a Covid quarantine centre.

It is unclear whether her boyfriend will also face charges.

Holland previously issued a statement to the local newspaper, Barbados Today, which read: "I would never do anything to jeopardise an entire nation that I have nothing but love and respect for."

It continued: "I firstly wish to apologise to the entire country of Barbados for what has been a massive mix up and misunderstanding during my most recent stay.

"I am currently working closely with the local authorities to rectify any issues on my part and will issue an update and full statement which I think is the only right thing to do to the Government and citizens of Barbados."
