Miley Cyrus has been a fixture at the Grammy Awards for more than a decade. The Hannah Montana star has performed at the biggest night in music a variety of times, showcasing her impressive live vocals for millions to hear. Cyrus has also been honored at the Grammys for her own music — she received a nomination for Bangerz for Best Pop Vocal Album. Here are the star’s best Grammy Award performances — and they all have one thing in common.
Miley Cyrus performed ‘In My Blood’ with Shawn Mendes in 2019
After supporting Shawn Mendes on social media before the 2019 Grammy Awards, Cyrus showed up to sing “In My Blood” with him at the show. As fans of Cyrus’ know, “In My Blood” is not a song of hers.
Mendes introduced Cyrus for the chorus, which the two sang as a duet. The “Plastic Hearts” singer then sang the second verse. She seamlessly hit the high notes and showed her mastery of making another’s song fit her voice and style.
A decade before Cyrus and Mendes’ performance of “In My Blood,” she made her debut on the Grammy Awards stage alongside Taylor Swift. And her performance with Swift has something in common with her performance with Mendes.
Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus sang ‘Fifteen’ in 2009 at the Grammys
Ahead of Swift’s cameo in Hannah Montana: The Movie, she sang “Fifteen” with Cyrus on the Grammy Awards stage. The two women sang while Swift played the guitar for an intimate and acoustic performance. Just like “In My Blood,” “Fifteen” is not a Cyrus original song.
Swift sang the first verse to the song, and then Cyrus joined in at the chorus. The singers then both sang the second verse together, blending their voices together for the duet.
Just like Cyrus did for the Mendes performance, Cyrus showed that she can adapt to another artist’s song and still bring her own flair to the performance.
Miley Cyrus sang with Elton John at the 2018 Grammy Awards
Cyrus impressed with her vocals yet again in 2018 at the Grammy Awards by singing “Tiny Dancer” with Elton John. He played the piano while dueting with Cyrus to the 1971 pop hit from Madman Across the Water.
She transitioned to the decades-old jam, displaying her ease yet again at stepping into singing another artist’s song.
She sang with her godmother Dolly Parton at the 2019 Grammys
At the 61st Grammys in 2019, Cyrus sang “Jolene” with her godmother Dolly Parton. Again, “Jolene” is not a song from the Disney Channel star. Cyrus had sung “Jolene” before, in a 2012 acoustic version of the song that has more than 300 million views. The Grammys performance came amidst a tribute to Parton, who received the MusiCares Person of the Year.
The start of the tribute featured Parton and Kacey Musgraves, as they sang “Here You Come Again.” After the “Jolene” cover between Cyrus and Parton, Marren Morris joined for “After the Gold Rush,” per Grammy.com.
People are speculating whether Cyrus might join for a Grammys performance with Harry Styles this year. The fan theory stemmed from Cyrus posting a lot about Styles on her social media leading up to the event on March 14.
The Grammy Awards will be available to watch on March 14 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, Paramount+, and Grammy.com.
