The production company of the flick Rust – starring Alec Baldwin – has been fined after it was found to have breached on-set safety laws after the fatal shooting of a cinematographer.

Halyna Hutchins sadly died on the set of Rust last October, with lawyers saying the prop gun went off after Baldwin pointed it at Ms Hutchins during a scene set-up.

The actor has said he was pointing the gun at Ms Hutchins at her instruction, and that it fired without him pulling the trigger.

The film's director, Joel Souza, was also wounded in the shooting on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set near Santa Fe.

Now a report into the incident found that the production company “knew that firearm safety procedures were not being followed on set and demonstrated plain indifference to employee safety”, according to PA.

The company has been given the maximum fine allowable by state law in New Mexico.

Rust Movie Productions has now been given a fine of $136,793 (£104,810).

The six-month investigation was carried out by the New Mexico Environment Department, with spokesman James Kenney telling PA: “Our investigation found that this tragic incident never would have happened if Rust Movie Productions, LLC had followed national film industry standards for firearm safety.

"This is a complete failure of the employer to follow recognized national protocols that keep employees safe.

"Employees should speak up about unsafe workplace conditions or report them anonymously to us."

While Robert Genoway, chief of the New Mexico Environment Department’s Occupational Health and Safety Bureau Bureau, added: “As a reminder, it is illegal for any employer to retaliate against any employee who alleges a workplace safety violation.”

The film has since been suspended following the incident, with Alec confirming in an emotional statement that the cinematographer was his "friend".

In a clip obtained by TMZ, he said: "The day I arrived in Santa Fe to start shooting I took her to dinner with Joel the director.

“We were a very, very… well-oiled crew shooting a film together and then this horrible event happened."

He added that he has been in "constant contact" with Halyna's family since the shooting, explaining: "I met with her husband Matthew and her son. The guy is overwhelmed with grief. It’s something that… there are incidental accidents on film sets from time to time, but nothing like this.

He said it was a “one in a trillion event”, with Halyna's husband and nine-year-old son dealing with the aftermath of the tragic incident.

“We are in constant contact with him and we’re very worried about his family and his kid," he said.

Halyna's husband Matt said after the shooting: "Gun safety was not the only problem on that set, there were standards that were not practiced.

"There are multiple responsible parties."
