1899 came out in full earlier this month on Netflix and subscribers have been puzzled by the plot ever since. Starring The Pursuit of Love actress Emily Beecham, the mystery drama tells the tale of migrants travelling across the sea to New York City. Naturally, fans have grown curious regarding actress Beecham and her life away from the small screen.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from 1899.

What is the nationality of 1899 star Emily Beecham?

1899 actress Emily Beecham was born on May 12, 1984, in Wythenshawe, Manchester.

While her dad is British, her mum is American, originating from Arizona, so Beecham has dual British-American citizenship.

Because of this, she is able to vote whenever there is a US election but still thinks of herself as a “northern girl at heart” according to the Evening Standard.

Her dad worked as a pilot which meant travelling around a lot and so got into drama at school as it was the only subject that wouldn’t alter, unlike various school syllabuses.

She explained to The Sydney Morning Herald: “Beecham’s father was a pilot, which meant the family moved around a lot when she was growing up. Drama clubs were her lifeline. “Some of them [the drama clubs] were amazing.

“I accidentally joined a drama class where the kids were about six years older than me.

“When you’re 13, that’s a lot. And they were so daring!

“They did these plays about quite intense topics and I remember being completely shocked that you could do acting like that.”

It has been reported that Beecham’s mother, on the other hand, works as an educational psychologist.

With her parents’ support, she was able to enrol at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 2003, at the age of 18.

She graduated three years later with a BA and went on to feature in a number of high-profile projects.

Some of which have included the Coen Brothers’ film Hail, Caesar! AMC series Into the Badlands and the titular role in the 2017 movie Daphne.

One of her most recent stand-out roles was in the BBC adaptation of The Pursuit of Love as Fanny last year.

She starred opposite actress Lily James and The Crown season five actor Dominic West.

Actress Emily Mortimer portrayed Beecham’s pushy mum in the period drama, directing and adapting the series behind the scenes.

Beecham opened up to Screenrant about the conversations she had with Mortimer behind the scenes.

“She’s [Mortimer] very naturally very funny”, Beecham said.

“And she’s very honest as well, which is super because we could always have really honest conversations about many of the topics that the girls were going through.

“Anything like motherhood and love; growing up and being a woman with the struggles or uncomfortable things we go through, or the exciting or sexy things.

“There’s just so much that we could talk and laugh about that [was] endlessly inspiring.”

As of yet, there has been no confirmation from Netflix of a second season of 1899.

Nevertheless, there have been talks of another outing of the period drama and given the cliffhanger ending, it does seem likely.

If 1899 is renewed, it could return to the small screen sometime in late 2023.

1899 is available to watch on Netflix.
