Good news for soap fans – BBC is planning on creating a new soap opera based in the North of England as they prepare to move more of the organisation out of London.
BBC bosses have said they are making plans to launch “two new network long-running dramas”, which has been outlined in documents that address the aims of the organisation within the next six years.
The report pledges to reallocate BBC funds so that a brand new soap can be created in the North which will have a similar feel to long-running soaps like EastEnders or Casualty.
Depending on the exact location of where the programme is filmed, it could mean that it will rival the likes of popular soap operas such as Emmerdale and Coronation Street.
The report also mentioned that a second series may be developed in either Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
A source from the BBC said: “We're still working through the exact detail but we expect it to be a long-running show.
“That could mean anything from a weekly programme to 30 episodes a year, but that’s all to be worked out.”
In addition to this, TV bosses also announced that over 400 existing jobs will be removed from London as part of plans to make the BBC more regional and less London focused.

At least 200 of these jobs will be from the BBC’s new operation and the rest will most likely be in radio.
The cooperation is planning to relocate entire departments and certain news divisions will be moved to Birmingham, Leeds, Cardiff and Salford.
They also mentioned that some of the “key strands” of Radio 1 and Radio 2 will be recorded in other parts of the UK in hopes to bring them closer to regional listeners.
Beeb bosses said that by the end of 2027 more than 60% of all their output will be made outside of London.
Eastenders has been filmed in Elstree Studios, London since the first day it aired in 1985. Holby City also uses the same studios for filming. However, Casualty is filmed in BBC Roath Lock Studios located in Cardiff, Wales.
For decades the BBC television headquarters was located in White City, however they relocated most of the organisation in 2013.
