Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway (Tony Clay) has had a pretty tough time of it in EastEnders as of late. Between struggling with his sexuality, harbouring secret feelings for Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden), and planning his wedding to Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) — not to mention the run-in he had with estranged dad Jonno (Richard Graham) — the young lad has had to deal with a lot, but his world will come crashing down once more when he receives some devastating news.
In the upcoming episodes, a woman named Vicky shows up in Walford, and she’s made it her mission to track down Callum. When she finally succeeds in doing so, she relays some awful news to the young man: her brother Chris — an ex-army colleague and former friend of Callum’s — has passed away.
Shocked and upset, Callum struggles to process the news. Vicky does her best to comfort him, and encourages him to come to the memorial later in the week so that he can bid a proper farewell to his mate.
On the day of the memorial, Callum finds himself unable to focus at work and — with Chris very much on his mind — he leaves unannounced and heads for the service.
Recent images reveal that Callum does in fact attend the memorial, but — whilst there — he avoids all of his other army mates who are in attendance.
With Whitney asking questions, Halfway reveals that his mate has died and — although his fiancé proves supportive — he struggles to cope and decides to head back to the memorial.
Callum’s reaction to the news of Chris’ passing would seem to indicate that they knew each other pretty well, but this begs the question as to why we’ve never heard him mention Chris before?
Having said that, the army is seemingly something that Callum struggles to talk about — something which he demonstrated back in May when he shouted at Tiffany (Maisie Smith) for trying on his uniform — so perhaps Chris’ death will prompt him to open up more about his life in the army?
