Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) tells Martin Fowler (James Bye) that Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) thinks she is dying in EastEnders.
Viewers will know that Jean, having found a lump in her breast on Christmas Day last year, came to believe that she’s terminally ill, and therefore resolved to live life to the fullest.
The legend decided to keep shtum, but when Stacey (Lacey Turner) was facing prison time, she opened up to Ruby, telling her that she’s dying in the hopes that such a thing would result in Ruby dropping the charges against her daughter.
Ruby, however, lied, telling Jean that she tried to do so, when in actual fact she never did.
But in the wake of Stacey’s sentencing, the nightclub owner became good pals with Jean, and as a result, she’s riddled with guilt over what she’s done.
A showdown ensued between the pair several weeks ago, with Jean telling Ruby that it’s her fault Stacey is in prison. In an effort to make up for her mistakes, Ruby transferred £2,000 to Jean’s account!
Martin comes to learn of Ruby’s donation, however, as upcoming scenes see the young man attempting to withdraw some cash, only to be told that he has insufficient funds! Determined to get to the bottom of it, he quizzes Ruby, asking if she has been giving all their money to Jean.
Ruby comes clean, and reveals that Jean has terminal cancer, leaving him speechless!
But things soon take another turn, as Lily (Lilia Turner) tells the couple that Jean is coming back, and she can’t wait to see Ruby!
Viewers will know that Jean and Ruby aren’t on the best of terms as of late, after Stacey lost her visitor privileges – something which Jean holds Ruby responsible for.
Ruby is worried about Jean will say upon her return, and therefore asks if she and Martin can go away somewhere together.
Martin, however, shuts her idea down, telling her that Jean needs them in her hour of need.
