This weekend, BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker and his dance partner Nadiya Bychkova will take to the dance floor to perform the American Smooth. The host sparked backlash from Strictly Come Dancing viewers last weekend after he was saved from elimination and Adam Peaty was sent home.

However, this weekend could be the 44-year-old’s last in the competition after he revealed he hasn’t done much dancing this week.

Speaking to Janette Manrara on Thursday’s It Takes Two, Dan admitted he suffered an injury during training with Nadiya.

“We have had a slight issue this week,” Dan admitted. “I had a bit of an injury to my left calf.

“We haven’t been able to do that much dancing this week, have we?”

Janette went on to point out the competition, “is anyone’s game”.

Although, Dan seemed uncertain, as he replied: “Not so sure about that.”

Dan and Nadiya received mixed reviews from the judges on Saturday night, with Craig Revel Horwood branding the routine “vanilla”.

Janette asked Nadiya about how proud she was of Dan following their performance.

“He was absolutely amazing,” the professional dancer beamed.

“And now every time we hear that song we have a routine to [dance] to it.”

On the night, Shirley Ballas gave the duo a score of eight which Dan was delighted with.

However, the BBC host admitted, he would: “Love to get higher scores.

“I love to listen to what the judges say. We talk about it on the Monday and the Tuesday.

“They know what they’re doing and they know what they’re looking for.”

“I am often saying to Nadiya the next week ‘well, they said that how do we sort of get there?’

“A couple of weeks ago they talked about ‘we want to see you believe in yourself a bit more and be more confident.’

“And tried to put all of those things into play.”

Nadiya went on to point out Dan had never danced before the competition.

“He was scared of going on the dancefloor,” the dancer explained.

“The progress and the improvement he shows is just incredible.

“It’s not about loving the dance and then actually being taught by someone of how to do it properly.

“It is actually being scared of it and going to go on and do that.”

It Takes Two airs weekdays at 6.30pm on BBC Two.
