Derek Cianfrance is in talks to direct Ryan Gosling in “Wolfman” for Universal and Blumhouse, marking a reunion between the director and actor.

Cianfrance, who previously worked with Gosling on both “Blue Valentine” and “The Place Beyond the Pines,” will also write the script for the film.

“The Invisible Man” director Leigh Whannell was previously in talks to direct and write a treatment, who an individual tells TheWrap had to exit due to a scheduling conflict.

Plot details for “Wolfman” are being kept under wraps. But the film follows the success of “The Invisible Man” and the studio’s latest approach to finding new, filmmaker-driven takes on Universal’s classic monster movie brands.

Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao and Jason Blum are producers on the “Wolfman” film.

“Horror movies were my first love – my entry into what cinema was capable of narratively, psychologically and aesthetically. Coupled with the opportunity to collaborate with Ryan again, this is truly a dream come true. I’m thrilled and inspired to work with the good folks at Blumhouse and Universal to bring this monster back to life in our collective unconscious,” Cianfrance said in a statement.

Cianfrance’s last feature film was 2016’s “The Light Between Oceans,” but he’s also the director behind the HBO series “I Know This Much Is True” with Mark Ruffalo, and he also shared an Oscar nomination with Darius Marder and Abraham Marder for his work writing the script for “Sound of Metal.”

Cianfrance is represented by CAA, Hunting Lane and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, LLP.

Deadline first reported the news.
