Escape to the Chateau viewers all have the same complaint about Dick and Angel's Christmas dinner

Dec 22, 2021

FANS of the Channel 4 show were left wanting to escape scenes of the family's Christmas dinner due to questionable side dishes.

Escape to the Chateau viewers were glad they weren't invited to the Strawbridge's Christmas dinner after watching this week's episode

Dick Strawbridge, 61, and Angel Strawbridge, 50, escaped to picturesque northwest France in 2014 to renovate the 45-bedroom Château-de-la-Motte Husson.

Purchasing the property for £280,000, they are currently on their eighth season of the Channel 4 show.

On Monday's episode, the married couple and their children Arthur, eight, and Dorothy, seven, cooked up a festive meal together.

As heartwarming as it was to see the whole family cooking together, viewers found one of the side dishes to be very questionable, a fondue that included sausage meat and raw stuffing.

A queasy fan said: "Sausage stuffing in a fondue? Food poisoning waiting to happen. Hope the plumbing is good."

"Food poisoning fondue," another echoed.

After Dick and Angel assembled a gigantic Christmas tree in their chateau home, the festive duo brainstormed how else to celebrate the holidays, with Dick admitting he wanted to learn more about French traditions.

They decided to go on a family outing and travelled 500 miles east to the medieval town of Colmar.

Looking like a Hallmark Christmas village, Dick said that it felt as if the town "wasn't real."

When supper time came around, the family headed to a restaurant that specialised in traditional dishes and ordered 'fondue vigneronne'.

Cheese lovers paused, as unlike typical cheese or oil-based fondues, these were made with hot white wine, vanilla, cloves and cinnamon and are traditionally served with chicken or turkey and sautéed potatoes.

Taking their new fondue knowledge with them, back at the chateau, Dick mused with the idea of turning a traditional Christmas dinner into a fondue meal.

Putting their spin on the fondue, they used red wine to help give it a Christmassy flavour. He and Arthur prepared the meat for the unusual Christmas meal, including parcels of bacon-wrapped stuffing and a fillet of beef and turkey for the family to dip into the fondue.

Hoping the meat and trimmings would be cooked within the fondue pot, Angel told her parents: "We're having a Christmas dinner tonight that I guarantee you would never have."
