I don't believe it! Grumpy Victor Meldrew is back from the dead.

The iconic character was killed off in sitcom One Foot in the Grave 21 years ago in the show’s last episode.

But in a shock move, he has been revived by its writer David Renwick for a new book.

One Foot in the Grave And Counting continues the story of misery Victor – played by Richard Wilson – whose catchphrase, “I don’t believe it!” was adopted by the public.

David, 70, said: “I killed him off 20 years ago. But people have to accept that the TV show and the book are separate entities.

“There are references in the book to stuff I wrote 30 years ago. But if you start to worry about that, you’d end up asking if he’s 100 years old now. So you have to draw a veil over it.

“I want people to take it at face value and just enjoy it.”

The book is set in the present day and all these years on, Victor is still just as frustrated. David said: “It’s nice to place Victor in a world we recognise.

“Much has changed over the past 20 years, but the same irritations and frustrations exist.

“Victor wouldn’t reject modern technology but he wouldn’t be interested in social media.”

One Foot In The Grave ran for six series and was a ratings smash for the BBC.

David added: “The character seems to have endured. People still use the name Victor Meldrew.”
