The HBO host returned to his studio last week after more than a year spent in his ”Blank Void“
After winning its sixth consecutive Emmy in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series last month, John Oliver’s weekly “Last Week Tonight” hasn’t missed a beat — though it did miss last weekend’s show.
Well, okay, technically Oliver didn’t miss a show; he just took the week off. But even though there wasn’t a full new episode, the late night host did release a new video for fans, updating viewers on the commercial the show wrote for a local car dealership earlier in the season.
The caveat? The commercial had to be done exactly as written, and whichever car dealership was chosen, couldn’t read it beforehand. But more on that shortly.
First, you’re probably wondering if “Last Week Tonight” has an entirely new episode this week. The answer is yes, there is a new episode of “Last Week Tonight“ on Sunday, October 24. Oliver will be in his usual time slot, at 11 p.m. ET.
Now, back to that mysterious car commercial. As it turns out, multiple dealerships wanted the opportunity to create the ad written by the show. But, “Last Week Tonight” would only give it to one, as the whole point of the segment was to highlight how so many dealerships use the same commercial scripts. (And in those scripts they were somehow all in a pickle suit screaming “I’m in a pickle!”).
The winner: Zumbrota Ford, in Zumbrota, Minnesota. And, as Oliver noted, “To their eternal credit, they threw themselves at the source material.”
No, the commercial wasn’t funny or goofy like some John Oliver fans might’ve expected. In fact, it was super serious, telling the story of a fractured couple fighting over a minivan they bought at Zumbrota Ford — at least at first.
By the end, Oliver and his team made sure that the owner of the dealership was once again in a pickle suit. You can watch the full web exclusive segment here.
