Money Heist has become a global sensation since the first season dropped on Netflix back in 2017 and it has become one of the streaming platform’s greatest shows. La Casa De Papel, as it’s known in Spanish, has been cancelled, with the second half of season five airing in December, bringing all storylines to a conclusion. After so much success and critical acclaim, why is the show ending?

Why is Money Heist being cancelled?

It was revealed last year Netflix had renewed the Spanish crime drama for a fifth and final season after four years of fans watching the Dali Mask crew pull off the “perfect robbery in Spain’s history”.

The show’s script coordinator Javier Gomez Santander explained it was never known how long the programme would last.

He said: “With La Casa De Papel, we go game by game, like Simeone. Chapter by chapter, sequence by sequence, line by line.

“We do not ever consider how long the show can last. If we got to know the scope of the phenomenon, we wouldn’t have thought to kill Berlin [played by Pedro Alonso],” he told El Mundo.

Therefore, it was never expected the hit series would make it to five seasons, let alone have a lasting future.

Javier also stipulated the show was “a failure” in Spain and was cancelled after just one season of being on air.

This was due to depleting viewing figures in the country and he was so convinced the show would come to an end, he began looking for other jobs.

However, Netflix bought the show for just two dollars and it’s been part of the history books ever since as the series has gone to new heights.

“They bunged it out without any promotion and within two weeks, the thing was number one around the world,” Left Bank Pictures head Andy Harries said.

How does Money Heist End?

Fans were left devastated by the news and executive producer Alex Pina explained the thought process about bringing the story to its conclusion.

Alex detailed how it took a year for writers to come up with a storyline that would “break up the band” for good.

He said: “How to put the Professor on the ropes. How to get into situations that are irreversible for many characters.

“The result is the fifth part of La Casa de Papel. The war reaches its most extreme and savage levels, but it is also the most epic and exciting season,” he told Deadline.

It has been a long time coming for fans to see the finale of the Spanish drama as season four dropped on Netflix back in April 2020.

The first part of season five will air Friday, September 3, 2021, before the final five episodes are made available from December 3, 2021.

Ahead of season five dropping on Netflix, there have been several teasers revealing how the show will come to its conclusion.

A synopsis reads: “The gang has been shut in the Bank of Spain for over 100 hours. They have managed to rescue Lisbon, but their darkest moment is upon them after losing one of their own.”

“The Professor [Alvaro Morte has been captured by Sierra [Najwa Nimri] and, for the first time, doesn’t have an escape plan,” it continues.

“Just when it seems like nothing else could go wrong, an enemy comes on the scene that is much more powerful than any they’ve faced: the army.

“The end of the greatest heist in history is approaching, and what began as a robbery will turn into a war.”

With new additions joining the cast as well, it seems fans are going to be in for quite the treat and won’t be disappointed by the ending.

One of the new cast members is Miguel Angel Silvestre, who will play Tokyo’s (Ursula Corbero) former love interest, Rene, but how does this all connect to the biggest bank robbery in Spanish history?

Money Heist seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix. Money Heist season 5 will be available to stream on Netflix at 8am on Friday, September 3, 2021.
