Channel Four’s hit game show recently left viewers shocked after backstage bickering between hosts Rachel Riley, 35, and Anne Robinson, 77 was brought to light. As the feud has reportedly escalated, Rachel has since threatened to quit the show.

According to an insider, Rachel could quit her role on Countdown if bosses don’t warn Anne about her behaviour.

The insider told The Sun how Anne grew tired of hearing Rachel talk to guests and decided to mute her microphone.

“Rachel and Anne had clashed for some time and for Rachel, enough is enough,” they explained.

“She has moaned about Anne a number of times and even said she would consider walking away from Countdown if the issues weren’t sorted,” the source added.

Countdown’s dictionary corner star and fellow Oxford graduate Susie Dent has reportedly given Rachel her full support.

While it appears as though the feud has escalated, Rachel has been able to temporarily take a step away from the show as the 35-year-old is currently on maternity leave and expecting her second child with Strictly’s professional dancer Pasha Kovalev.

The insider continued: “Rachel went on maternity leave last month and the break from the set couldn’t have come at a better time.”

The source added: “She has really struggled with Anne and been backed by Susie, who has seen it all first hand and has similar gripes.

Anne, the ex-presenter of the BBC game show Weakest Link, joined Countdown in June, while Rachel has been part of the team since 2009.

Despite the pair’s feud, Anne’s appearance has increased the show’s viewership, with the ratings at its highest since 2012.

A Channel Four insider admitted: “Anne brings something to the show that no other female presenter can.

They stated: “She’s single-handedly bumped up ratings and made Countdown a talked-about show once again. But, of course, Rachel is a maths genius which isn’t an easy skill to replicate. We just hope they can hold peace talks so both stay.”

The source went on to disclose: “Rachel just wants to be treated with more respect and she expects it to be different when she returns to filming.”

They added: “No one wants to lose Rachel because she brings glamour and fun to the show, as well as being an absolute whizz at maths.”

When Anne was initially announced as the show’s first female host in February, she shared her excitement about joining the show with Rachel and Susie.

The 77-year-old said: “The three of us will transform things. It will be Countdown goes chic, won’t it?”

The Essex-born maths whizz previously confessed she found it difficult to bond with Anne after she replaced Nick Hewer earlier in the year.

Due to Anne joining the show during the coronavirus pandemic, Rachel explained it was “completely different,” and stated, “we used to all be in the same room together but because of coronavirus everyone’s off separately having their make-up done so we don’t see each other as much.”

She later added: “We’ve not really done much team bonding.”

Countdown airs weekdays at 2.10pm on Channel 4.
