Sofia Vergara to Turn Into Colombian Drug Queen on Netflix Limited Series

Having signed on to portray Griselda Blanco on the show about the devoted mum-turned-drug cartel boss, the ‘Modern Family’ star will also take on the role as executive producer.

AceShowbizSofia Vergara has signed on to play Colombian drug queen Griselda Blanco on a new Netflix limited series. The “Modern Family” star will flex her drama muscles on “Griselda“, which chronicles the life of the devoted mum-turned-drug cartel boss, dubbed the Black Widow.

Empire” screenwriter Ingrid Escajeda has teamed up with the team behind Netflix drug drama “Narcos” to create the new six-part series, which Vergara will also serve as executive producer on.

“Griselda Blanco was a larger-than-life character whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion dollar empire years before many of the most notorious male kingpins we know so much about,” Vergara said in a statement. “We are thrilled… to bring this story of her life to the screen.”

Fellow executive producer Eric Newman added, “Griselda Blanco has long been a passion project for Sofia, and we are grateful that she and her partners at LatinWe have chosen us to help her tell that story.”

“Sofia is a brilliant talent and her passion combined with a fantastic story from Doug and Ingrid, and the amazing Andres Baiz at the directing helm, means we have a very exciting series to share with audiences,” he continued.

News of Vergara’s series comes a year after reports suggested “The Handmaid’s Tale” director Reed Morano was in talks to oversee a movie about Blanco, starring Jennifer Lopez.

Screenwriter William Monahan, who won an Oscar for writing the script for filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s gangster film “The Departed“, was also in discussions to revamp the first draft of “The Godmother (2022)“, written by Terry Winter and Regina Corrado. At the time, it was reported J.Lo would produce the film.
