The Alienist: Angel of Darkness thrilling series two trailer

The Alienist season two was released on TNT and Netflix back in 2020 as the team dealt with a new grisly crime. However, some will already be wondering if there will be a third season of the beloved drama as well. Here’s what has been revealed about this.

Will there be a season 3 of The Alienist?

Fans of The Alienist have been hooked to the latest season of the Victorian crime drama over the last few months.

Following Dr Laszlo Kreizler (played by Daniel Brühl), the latest outing saw the criminal psychologist solving a new case.

Now the show is about to come to an end on TNT, fans are curious to know if a third season has been confirmed or not yet.

So far, The Alienist has not officially been cancelled or renewed by the network.

However, there are some signs it might be returning, including the enthusiasm of the cast and crew.

In a recent interview with Collider, John Moore star Luke Evans told the publication how he would like to keep exploring the character.

He said: “They all have the potential to carry a storyline again, further and further – some other story, some other plot, some other twist, some other murder, some other sinister subject matter.

“I love playing John. If that happened, then yeah, it’d be great.”

As well as this, there is plenty of potential for more story as the show is actually based on a series of novels written by Caleb Carr.

The third book called Surrender, New York has already been published.

However, there is a big catch as this story takes place in 2016 and follows new characters.

This could mean the major players on the show would likely not be back again if the series also went down this route.

Of course, if the series did return for a third season, there is also the possibility it might follow a new original story.

Showrunner Stuart Carolan hinted this was the route they would take during a recent TCA panel.

He revealed how he was hoping Carr would write a third book set in the era with these characters.

Carolan said: “We need to wait for Caleb Carr to write a third book.

“My understanding is that he is writing a third book so you just have to wait and see.”

However, according to TV Series Finale, the ratings for season two have been lower than expected.

The publication revealed the show averaged around 1.04 million viewers, which is down about 50 percent on season one.

Therefore, at the moment it seems like viewers will just have to wait and see what the future holds for the show.

As soon as anything is announced, Express.co.uk will update this article.

When will The Alienist season 3 be released?

Given there has been no official announcement yet, it’s hard to tell when it could be released.

There was a gap of about two years between seasons one and two.

Therefore, if it goes ahead, the third outing might be released sometime in 2022.

However, given currently filming restrictions caused by COVID-19, this could also be delayed.

The Alienist seasons 1-2 are on Netflix now.
