Hulu’s dystopian series introduced Nick Blaine (played by Max Minghella) in season one and he played a vital role in June Osborne’s (Elisabeth Moss) journey to freedom. As The Handmaid’s Tale approaches production for the upcoming instalment, the actor reflected on season four and opened up about Elisabeth behind the scenes.
Much like the entire film industry, the production of The Handmaid’s Tale was also affected by Covid-19 and the pandemic.
During that unprecedented time, the series was filming season four and Elisabeth had made her directorial debut in three episodes.
In an interview with screenrant.com Max opened up about filming and shared his admiration for Elisabeth.
He revealed: “I was very moved when I watched season 4, I was so proud of everybody’s work in the difficult circumstance of shooting during a pandemic.
He stated: “Elisabeth Moss, what a beast. She’s just so formidable and fearless; she led us through this crazy situation, and then ended up delivering the best season yet.”
Season four saw June finally make it to Canada and become a free woman after seven years of being held captive in Gilead.
During her time working at the Waterford household, she met Nick, who worked as Fred Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) driver and they hit it off.
They had a secret relationship which would’ve been punishable by death if they had been caught.
Throughout the series, Nick made multiple attempts to help June escape, this was seen in season two when he set up an escape route for her with the help of the Underground Femaleroad.
Although it was unsuccessful, the pair reunited in season four, when Nick offered to help June find her daughter Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake) who was still in Gilead.
Nick and June also shared a daughter Nichole, who was present when they had their emotional reunion.
As a Handmaid, she was forced to take part in a ritualised act called Ceremony, where should be raped by Fred, while his wife Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) held her down.
As the wives in Gilead were infertile, it was the Handmaid’s duty to conceive for them.
When this proved unsuccessful, a desperate Serena hatched a secret plan for Nick to impregnate June, unaware that the two were romantically involved.
This worked and after June gave birth, she kidnapped baby Nichole and gave her to fellow Handmaid Emily Malek (Alexis Bledel) who was running away to Canada.
Season four also saw Max become promoted to Commander due to Fred’s recommendation.
Elsewhere in the interview, Max shared his exhilaration for the upcoming season five and said: “I’m so excited to go back to it, you never know what’s going to happen from episode to episode.
“That’s the fascinating thing about television because you’re discovering it with the audience every episode,” he shared.
“I love playing this character, I always find some fun in it, and I’m just very grateful for this job, I’m already lamenting the day that we’re gonna have to stop,” Max added.
Viewers are also excited for the upcoming season and have expressed their desire to see how Nick will continue to help June.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 is available to stream on Hulu in the USA and airs Sundays on Channel 4 in the UK.
