The Nevers premiered on HBO last month on April 11 and will drop on Sky and NOW TV on May 17 in the UK. The hit new drama is a fantasy drama all about superheroes in Victorian London. But what is the show about and what is it based on?
The new series is a high-fantasy drama set in Victorian London, exploring an X-Men style team of superheroes.
The series synopsis reads: “An epic tale following a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.”
Created by Joss Whedon, the showrunner is best known for his television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel.
He is also known for directing the smash hits Avengers Assemble and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Now Whedon has returned to his TV fantasy roots for this series.
What is The Nevers based on?
The series is an original drama written and directed by Joss Whedon.
Joining him in directorial duties is David Semel and Zetna Fuentes, known for Heroes and Jane the Virgin, respectively.
Whedon is also joined by several writers in creating the new show.
Jane Espenson (known for Game of Thrones), Melissa Iqbal (Humans), Keniv Lau (Lovecraft Country), Madhuri Shekar (Evil Eye), Laurie Penny (Haunting of Bly Manor), and Douglas Petrie (Daredevil), all join him in the writer’s room.
Whedon is bringing together his experience in both fantasy television and superhero storytelling with The Nevers.
During a Comic-Con panel, Whedon explained the series: “They [The Nevers] themselves are not called that in the show,
“It’s a phrase that’s meant to evoke a sort of reaction to their oddity, to what is considered unnatural,” he continued.
The first series of the show will air with six episodes, with the show intended to be the jumping-off point for an extended series.
HBO is familiar with the superhero genre, releasing graphic-novel-inspired Watchmen in 2019.
The series stars Olivia Williams (known for Counterpart), James Norton (Grantchester), Tom Riley (Dark Heart).
Also in the cast are Ann Skelly (Vikings), Ben Chaplin (The Letter for the King), Pip Torrens (Road Kill), Zackary Momoh (Death in Paradise).
The Nevers released April 11 in the USA, with HBO releasing a trailer for the show back in March.
The series will drop in the UK on May 17.
The Nevers is available to watch now on HBO and HBO Max and from May 17 on NOW in the UK.
