Being a fan of This Is Us means becoming a professional sleuth and piecing together clues from the Pearsons’ flashbacks and flash forwards to figure out where they are at the end of all of this—and unfortunately, the end is coming sooner than many who have fallen in love with this family would want. Though season 5 is still underway, season 6 is right around the corner, and there’s good news and bad news. The good news? The sixth season is definitely happening. The bad news? It’s going to be the show’s last.
Before you absolutely freak out, here’s what we know so far.
This has been the plan for a while.
Back in 2019, when This Is Us was renewed for Season 6, showrunner Dan Fogelman revealed that, in his vision for the show, it would only run for six seasons total, because at that point, the whole story would have been told.
“We never set out to make a television series that was going to last 18 seasons, so we have a very direct plan,” Fogelman told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. “I have script pages I have written and I’m writing that really are deep, deep, deep into the future. We have a plan for what we’re going to do, and I know what the plan is.”
So what are we going to see between now and then?
There are still so many loose ends that need to be tied up before then, too — and with just over a season and a half to do it, it’s a tall order. We’ve always known that, at the end of all of this, the family is gathering to say goodbye to Rebecca, but we have no idea where most of the Pearsons are in their lives at that point (or when exactly it is).

Are Kate and Toby still together? What about Kevin and Madison? What’s the deal with Randall and Beth, and Deja, Annie, and Tess now that they’re all grown up? Then, there are all the missing pieces that have to do with Jack and Rebecca, too, so my fingers are crossed that the end of the show will bring everything to a satisfying conclusion—and yes, there will be a lot of tears involved.
But don’t fret! There’s good news.
But if thinking about this show ending so soon is making you cry more than actually watching the show, not all hope is lost! Even if the final episode of season 6 is the series finale, there’s still a chance that we might get to see more of the Pearsons (and the characters in their orbit).
In an interview with NBC in January 2021, Chrissy Metz (who plays Kate) said that the cast is “distraught” about the end of the show coming up, and this might not really be the end.
“Who knows? There might be a spinoff,” she said. “Who knows? Dan might say, ‘Oh, maybe let’s go season 7.’ Who knows? Listen, we haven’t even finished season 5, so I have to stay in today.”
No matter what the future holds, if season 6 is, indeed, the grand finale for the legendary story of the Pearson family, This Is Us is going to give us a hell of a finale. There’s still so much to look forward to, so don’t get too bummed out yet!
