McFly frontman Tom Fletcher took to Twitter on Sunday night to playfully express his shock after EastEnders frontman Shane Richie "dropped his wife Giovanna Fletcher off a cliff" during I'm A Celeb 's opening episode.

Tom, 35, joined the rest of the nation watching the return of the hit ITV series as a new batch of celebs – including his wife – were sent to Wales to set up camp at Gwrych Castle.

For the first challenge, celebs had to abseil off the edge of a cliff to reach their rucksacks which had been padlocked to the cliff wall.

As Shane helped Giovanna over the edge, Tom watched on from home before laughing about the incident on Twitter.

Tom tweeted to his 1.2 million followers: "@TomFletcher Did Shane Richie just drop my wife off a cliff?! #ImACeleb."

His post was quickly met with a flurry of comment from fellow viewers.

One supporter replied: "Don't worry 'he's got her."

"What an absolute boss your wife is. Actually beaming for her and you guys."

A second teased: "Tom Fletcher having beef with Shane Ritchie is going to save 2020 #ImACeleb."

A third continued: "I think Gi is the most fearless one of them all! She’s got this."

Tom later added: "That was an awesome first I'm A Celeb show.

"Thanks for all the lovely messages about @MrsGiFletcher.

"It will mean the world to her. She really is the best person on the planet.

"Missing her loads but thoroughly enjoyed watching her get dropped off cliffs and covered in bugs."

I'm A Celeb bosses were forced to think outside the box this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

With the usual plan of jetting to the Australian jungle out of the options, bosses splashed out on Gwrych castle in north Wales, transforming the ruins into a stunning TV set.

Sporting a Game of Thrones vibe, the new look camp is a far cry from the jungle but promises to be just as gruelling as the usual format.

Once again, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly are hosting the series.
