Strictly Come Dancing is back on BBC One this weekend and the couples are excited to be celebrating the BBC’s milestone birthday. Radio DJ Tyler West and his professional dancer Dianne Buswell have impressed the judges so far, especially following their Couple’s Choice dance. Yet professional dancer and Dancing with the Stars expert, Gary Edwards, believes they may have hit a wall when it comes to their progress.

Tyler and Dianne wowed the judges with their garage megamix routine last week and they were not far off scoring full marks.

This weekend they will be dancing the Tango to the Doctor Who theme tune and they hope to do the iconic track justice.

There is no doubt Tyler is one of the high flyers in the competition, but Gary Edwards raised concerns over his progress.

Speaking to Express.co.uk he said: “With them, they hit the high quite early and I didn’t find [their last dance] anywhere near the best on the night.

“It didn’t light my fire at all, I was disappointed as I thought it was going to be much better.

“Technically he’s pretty good, he’s got his balance in the right place but beyond that, it’s what makes a champion?

“A lot of people, some of the best dancers who have ever lived, they wouldn’t even make Blackpool because they didn’t have the performance level, they were just great technical dancers.

“We have our bible with techniques in but if you just follow that technique, you wouldn’t win anything.”

The expert said he has noticed Tyler has not shown many signs of improvement since the previous week.

He explained: “I think with him, he’s almost on a plateau. If I look at the improvement from last week it’s not a massive improvement compared to others.

“The others can easily catch him. It didn’t do it for me.”

He likened Tyler’s situation to that of actor Will Mellor, saying: “He and Tyler, it’s not going fast enough.

“They have stopped improving for me, is that because of attitude or because of the technical side?

“I just don’t see improvement on the technical or performance side, it’s almost as if they have reached their comfort zone.

“I just think if he doesn’t improve next week the others will catch him up.”

Despite these observations, Tyler and Dianne were thrilled with the positive comments from the judges.

Dianne Buswell thanked Tyler on Instagram, saying: “We had the best time ever on that dance floor!!! Thank you @tylerwestt you legend.”

After his performance, head judge Shirley Ballas said: “Your movements were fantastic”, adding: “It was great, well done!”

Anton Du Beke said: “It was spectacular, it was brilliant, it was clean. And dancing on the decks… absolutely brilliant.”

Craig Revel Horwood did say he should have danced more “into the floor” and had come comments about his arms.

However, he still loved the performance and Tyler and Dianne were over the moon.

Motsi Mabuse was equally as impressed with his performance and said everyone had taken the talent up a notch on the night.

He has since been preparing to wow the panel and the public with an intense Tango, but has he done enough to avoid the dance-off again?

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturday on BBC One at 6.40pm.
