What I Rent: Emma and Adam, £800 a month for a three-bedroom house in Measham

Nov 23, 2021

Welcome once again to What I Rent, our series that explores the reality of renting.

Last week we met Bipasha, who together with her partner, pays £2,150 a month for a three-bedroom house in Cricklewood, London.

This time around we’ve gone down quite a bit on the monthly rent scale.

Today we go inside the house rented by Adam and Emma, both 27.

Adam is a mechanical engineer while Emma is a marketing manager. The couple share a home in Measham, Leicestershire.

We chatted with Emma about what they get for a monthly rent of £800.

Hi, Emma! Who lives here?

It is just myself and Adam who live here currently, although I’d love a pet if I can persuade Adam! It is a little tricky being in rented accommodation so we would need to think about it properly before making any commitments.

How much is rent? What about bills?

We pay £800 in rent each month and our bills come to around £300, including council tax, broadband and utilities.

What do you get for what you pay?

We have three bedrooms, an open plan kitchen/diner with utility space and large living room. We also have two bathrooms (one en-suite) and a downstairs WC. We have turned one of the bedrooms in to a dressing room and the other is used as a home office/snug so we get good use out of all of the rooms.

Outside, we have a single garage and a good-sized garden.

Do you think you have a good deal?

Yes, on balance we think we have a good deal. The house is spacious and in really good condition. It is perfectly suited to our needs and we love the area.

Whereabouts is your home based? What do you think of the area?

Our home is in the village of Measham in North West Leicestershire. We love living in this area, a lot of our friends and family are close by and there is plenty to do in the nearby town of Ashby-De-La-Zouch.

We are also well situated for commuting to and from work with access to four major cities all within 30 minutes.

How did you find this property?

We actually got quite lucky in finding this house.

We originally viewed a similar house on the same estate and fell in love, however it went to other people. The letting agent then let us know this had come available and we could have the first viewing.

It was an instant yes from us!

How have you made the house feel like home?

The house was in really good condition when we moved in, which we were very grateful for. We’ve added our own furniture and tried to keep to a theme throughout.

We also love animals so you’ll find lots of them scattered through the house on our lamps, doorstops and even on the pillows!

We spend a lot of time in Homesense looking for quirky ornaments to allow us to put our own stamp on the place.

Have you found it difficult to decorate when renting? Is your landlord happy with you doing bits?

Not really, we’ve tried to add our own style through the furniture and ornaments rather than more permanent decoration.

We have added some wall art but have used command strips to make sure we aren’t damaging the walls.

We are really lucky with our landlords, when we have asked for permission to make small changes they have always been very positive.

Do you feel like you have enough space?

Absolutely! The house is the perfect size for us and bigger than we originally thought we would get.

There is plenty of storage space and the garage is super useful to have. The only thing we would love more of is parking!

Are there any problems with the home you have to deal with?

Not really, we’ve been really lucky. Whenever we have had a small issue the landlords have been super responsive and fixed it almost immediately without any issue – we know that we’ve got it good!

Do you have plans to move again?

Not immediately. We are really happy with the location and the house, however with rented accommodation you never know what is round the corner.

Do you want to own a place some day or are you happy to rent?

Yes, sometime in the future that would be lovely, however it is probably a little way off as we love the freedom and flexibility that renting gives us and not having to worry about big expenses if anything was to go wrong.

Shall we take a look around?

What I Rent is a weekly series that’s out every Tuesday at 10am.

How to get involved in What I Rent

What I Rent is Metro.co.uk’s weekly series that takes you inside the places people are renting, to give us all a better sense of what’s normal and how much we should be paying.

If you fancy taking part, please email [email protected] You’ll need to take pictures of your kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedroom, plus a few photos of you in your bedroom or living area.

Make sure you get permission from your housemates! You’ll also need to be okay with sharing how much you’re paying for rent, as that’s pretty important.

We’re not just after the prettiest places out there, by the way. We want the reality of renting, so if you’re currently renting a place you hate, we’d love to see that too (and sympathise greatly!).
